This is the story of a girl.

In some ways a very ordinary girl. She had favourite toys.

Her mother and father loved her. And she wanted to make friends.

In other ways, she wasn't ordinary at all.

"Wren, are you ready to go with your father?"

"Wren? WREN! Answer me!"

"Suit up! He's taking you out to the Relay."

27th Century, Upsilon Andromedae star system, 44 light years from Earth.

UPSF Dirac, a research base orbiting Cloud, a gas-giant planet in the Upsilon Andromedae system.

Three light years from the nearest human colony.

"Dirac Base to SK4: Go for launch."

"SK4 to Dirac Base: Engaging hypersonic."

"SK4 to Dirac: Heading to Relay."

"OK Wren, time you learned to fly this thing."

"Dad, I CAN'T!"... "Yes you CAN, I've seen you in that sim."

"Your brain is different so neurolink won't work."

"It's old school for you, on the manual controls."

"Awesome job Wren! You'll be a DRifter pilot in no time!"

"SK4 to Dirac: Docked at Relay. Commencing repairs."

"I'll activate the Relay while you attach the power module with the repulsors."

"That's it Sweetheart!"

"Weird! Dirac: I'm seeing interstellar traffic. Looks like a download from those UPSF jocks at 47 Ursae..."

"BOOM!"

"Wren, I'm hurt bad. Can you get me back?"

"Wren, you have to bring Father back by yourself. There's no time to rescue you."

"Mom, I CAN'T!"

You can't...YET. C'mon, I'll help you!"

"You're in manual mode...Keep it smooth and level."

"Mom, I'm having a panic attack!"..."Wren, let's do 4-7-8 breathing...4: Breathe in. 7: Hold. 8: Breathe out."

"Almost home! But there's some bumps up ahead..."

"DANGER! LIFE SUPPORT CRITICAL!"..."TOO LOUD!"

"You did it! Everyone is cheering...Wren, you're a hero!"

"Your Dad and I love you SO much!"

"Is Dad gonna die?...Anyway, Mom can we go out to the Weather Station again?"

(Three days later)..."Let's just stay a little while at the Station...We have to get back to help Dad when he wakes up."

"Try air brakes and turbo...see if you can keep up in Manual while I'm neurolinked to the AI."

"You beat my AI to the station! No one's ever done that."

"Did you have fun on the trip out here?"

"Wren, what are you thinking about?"

"I'm looking at this groove on the floor."

"Think about what's in MY brain for once!"

"I can't HELP it! What's wrong with my brain?"

"Wren, I'm sorry. It's just that-"

HISSSS-CRACKLE-BOOOM!!!

"(...wren? can you hear me? I'm drifting away from the station...sensors down...)"

"I got my power back on...mom...where are you?"

"(...wren...your comms are down...can't find you...head back to base...sweetheart...please...)"

"Mom?...hrmmm... goodbye mom..."

Engaging hypersonic mode. Destination: Dirac Base."
